
Geographical
situation and access conditions
Constituted
by a set of islets of alluvial accumulation and situated
in the lower part of the Oueme river, the Lake village of
the Aguegues covers an area of 52 Kmsq in the southwest
of the Oueme Department. The land is annually flooded by
rises in the water level for 3 to 5 months (from July till
november). The access to the Aguegues is two-ways ; by water
by road. The Aguegues are at less than 30 minutes from Porto-Novo
(through the landing stage of Djassin) by motorized boat
and at about 1h 30 mns by dugout canoe. There are 3 main
road ways to reach there according to the itineraries below

Culture
and economic activity
Today
the Aguegues shelter a population of more than twenty-four
thousand (24 000) in habitants made essentially of two socio-ethnical
groups : the Toffinous and the Ouemenous.
The Aguegues represent an important spiritual center where
revealed religion and traditional one mix themselves. Some
monuments retrace the history of this culture.
The economic activities depend on the rhythm of the rises
in the water level and are essentially based on fishing,
agriculture, rearing and trade.
